Des Bettany – Sketch Book Confiscated

Des wrote the following in 1991 as part of a statement to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle for Singapore:

‘My personal worst moment came when I had to appear before the Japanese Commandant and an assortment of interpreters, to try and explain away… a book of political cartoons I had drawn… This was at a time when the war was going badly for Germany and Japan and this was reflected in the cartoons… The Japanese did not approve. I never saw the book again.’

Des told those close to him that he narrowly escaped being ‘given a short haircut’, POW slang for being beheaded.
