Shipwreck near Horn Island, Queensland, 1984

This photograph from one of the most remote parts of Queensland is from the Ron and Ngaire Gale collection, a major feature of State Library of Queensland’s picture collection. The Gales were photo journalists who worked in northern and western Queensland during the 1980s. Their photographs evoke the tranquillity of tropical islands, the stillness of the rainforests, the breathtaking beauty and infinite variety of tropical sunrises and sunsets and the indescribable sense of loneliness and isolation of the outback.
