On 3 May, Sydney Town Hall is hosting a special open day as part of the National Trust’s Heritage Festival. Sydneysiders are encouraged to come along and share their memories, stories and any memorabilia they may have relating to Sydney Town Hall for a forthcoming exhibition.
Sydney Town Hall, built in the 1880s, is an iconic landmark, council chambers, performance venue and meeting place all in one. Throughout its 140 year history, virtually every Sydney resident would have a connection of some sort to the Town Hall – and, this Saturday, City of Sydney staff want to hear yours.
“We know that Sydney Town Hall is architecturally significant and striking,” said Lord Mayer Clover Moore. It has special significance for Sydneysiders and we want to hear the stories and connections people have with this beautiful, historic building.”
“Over the years, thousands of proud parents have looked on as their children have held centre stage, and music lovers have enjoyed concerts of all genres, from violin concertos to Kurt Vile and Lady Gaga. It has also been the scene of many passionate political rallies, civic receptions, balls, graduations, weddings, exhibitions, conferences and parties.”
The Archives, History and Curatorial teams from the City of Sydney welcome your contributions. Tell the expert panel why Sydney Town Hall is important to you and the city overall. Bring along any photographs, souvenirs, postcards or event programs you may have relating to the iconic building. Facilities will be on hand to record, document and copy your material.
Other highlights in store on the open day include free mystery tours, floor talks, drawing classes and other activities for children.
