App review :: Hoddle’s Grid Street History of Melbourne; Free; iOS
This State Library of Victoria app is built on Hoddle’s Grid, created in the 1830s by Robert Hoddle, the surveyor who mapped inner Melbourne’s famously ordered grid layout.
Using hundreds of 19th- and 20th-century photographs from the Library’s 300,000-plus collection of digitised images, this fascinating and fun app illuminates how over 150 addresses and points of interest across Melbourne’s city grid appeared in the past. It includes interesting historical snippets, listings of upcoming Library events, and an ‘Around Me’ feature highlighting Hoddle’s Grid locations in the vicinity.
